Roster moves: Mariners agree to contracts with Andino, Kinney, tender offers to four other players

With the major league baseball deadline looming for teams to tender (offer) contracts to players on their 40-man roster, who had not already been signed for 2013 season, the Seattle Mariners did a little roster maintenance on Friday evening.

Seattle tendered contracts to four players – catcher John Jaso, pitchers Shawn Kelley and Jason Vargas and shortstop Brendan Ryan – who were all arbitration eligible for the upcoming season. The Mariners now can and the four players can agree on a contract for the upcoming season, or the players can wait for arbitration, where their salary is determined by a

Chone Figgins officially released by the Mariners

Chone Figgins was officially released by the Mariners today. After designating him for assignment, the team had 10 days to either trade or release the veteran infielder. Not surprisingly, no one claimed him off of waivers. He is now a free agent.

There isn’t much more to day. He’s gone and the Mariners have finally moved on. I think we can all agree that’s a good thing.

Mariners interested in Mike Napoli

The Mariners search for hitting has led them to conversations with free agent  Mike Napoli.  The DH/1B/catcher  was an all-star in 2011 after having a career season with the Texas Rangers, hitting .320 with 30 homers and 75 RBI. He posted a monster 1.046 OPS that season.

But in 2012, Napoli regressed. A series of leg injuries caused him issues. He hit .227 with 24 homers and 56 RBI and a .812 OPS.

According to the Boston Globe, Napoli met with the Red Sox and was offered a three-year contract. While the blog says he will meet with the Mariners,

A painful reminder of what might have been …

Today is the anniversary of the tragic, senseless death of Mariners outfielder Greg Halman, who was murdered at the hands of his own brother. Regardless of his baseball potential, he was good kid with an easy smile and a personality that drew others to him.

Remember life is precious whether you are a baseball star or a baseball fan.

The Chone Figgins era comes to an end as Mariners finalize 40-man roster

The Chone Figgins era – a three-year period of unmet expectations, mutual frustration and lack of production – came to an end in Seattle on Tuesday night, when the Mariners designated him for assignment. It effectively ended a relationship with the 34-year old infielder that resulted in nothing more than millions of dollars spent by the Mariners, and very little in return from Figgins.

With 40-man rosters needing to be finalized by a 9 p.m. deadline, and a few valuable prospects not on the 40-man roster, who were at risk of being claimed by other teams in the upcoming Rule
