Hector Noesi lasted four outs against the Baltimore Orioles lineup last night, and the Seattle Mariners will send a younger, less experienced right-handed rookie to the mound tonight – Erasmo Ramirez.
No Baltimore hitter has ever faced him, no surprise given this will be his sixth major league start. The Orioles are deep in the hunt for an Orange October, and will start 12-game winner Wei-Yin Chen.
Erasmo? He has one career victory – earned last week against Toronto. The key to his success his ground balls, which he can get with most any of his pitches as long as he maintains an over-the-top delivery from his 5-foot-11 frame.
Beyond that, Erasmo will need offense. The Mariners have, surprisingly, hit 19 home runs in their last 16 home dates, including three last night in a 10-4 loss.
The lineup news tonight: Miguel Olivo and Casper Wells return against LHP Chen. Here’s that lineup:
Dustin Ackley 2B
Franklin Gutierrez CF
Kyle Seager 3B
Jesus Montero DH
Michael Saunders LF
Justin Smoak 1B
Casper Wells RF
Miguel Olivo C
Brendan Ryan SS
Erasmo Ramirez RHP
