Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez makes his 28 start of the season today on natiional television, and may in fact be the only reason Fox wanted to televise this Mariners-Angels game.

A Cy Young Award candidate again at 26, Hernandez is 13-5 with a 2.43 earned run average, and among those wins are four 1-0 shutouts – and indication of how little margin for error he’s had in 2012.

Behind him, outfielder Michael Saunders is down with a groin strain and likely won’t play again until mid-week. Given tahat, Seattle recalled outfielder Carlos Peguero, who is on the bench, and right-handed pitcher Erasmo Ramirez, who is in the bullpen for now.

The Mariners face Ervin Santana, a righty capable of greatness – he’s thrown a no-hitter – and spectacular failures (5.45 ERA). Here’s the Seattle lineup:

Dustin Ackley      2B
Franklin Gutierrez      CF
Kyle Seager          3B
John Jaso            C
Jesus Montero           DH
Eric Thames         RF
Justin Smoak        1B
Trayvon Robinson   LF
 Brendan Ryan            SS
Felix Hernandez         RHP
