The Seattle Mariners pitched a fine game, got a game-tying home run from Justin Smoak in the seventh inning and a game-wininng fly ball from John Jaso in the ninth to beat the Minnesota Twins, 3-2.

The victotry left the Mariners with a 57-64 record – 21-13 since the All-Star break – and left them feeling like winners.

“When you’ve got guys like Felix (Hernandez), Jason Vargas and a bullpen where everybody seems to throw 95 mph-plus, you play a lot of close games,” shortstop Brendan Ryan said. “We’re learning to win those games.”

Vargas went 6 2/3 innings, and despite a few dings, the Mainers bullpen – Josh Kinney, Charlie Furbush, Stephen Pryor, Lucas Luetge and Tom Wilhelmsen – didn’t allow a run the final 2 1/3 innings.

Then, in the ninth inning, Michael Saunders and Brendan Ryan singled and Dustin Ackley walked to load the bases with no one out.

Eric Wedge sent up Jaso, who he’d saved for just this situation.

“We had a pinch-hitting situation in the eighth inning with a man on second and two outs, and Eric (Wedge) used Eric Thames,” Jaso said. “If they send me up, they walk me. Coming off the bench, all you hope for is the chance to get a swing or two in.

“Last year in Tampa, I pinch hit in the sixth inning – the first guy off the bench. This season, I’m being saved for the ninth inning and I think I’m more effective for it.”

Jaso lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, Saunders scored and the Mariners were assured of winning their series against the Twins.

  1. Did Jaso just take a little swipe at Maddon? I think he’s got Felix’s back with that one; Maddon is still chirping about the umping in the perfect game, and that he doesn’t care what the M’s are doing. In which case, he might like to have a nice tall glass of STFU.

Saunders’ single in the ninth was a nice moment. Hope he’s pulling out of his slump. And, while everything worked out, I hope Ackley will take some extra bunting pactice over the next few days.

I say F Maddon as well. Felix would’ve shut your team down even if you had delayed for a half an hour. Give the guy his credit and then shut it! You could even whine after the game. After that day is over, you just need to keep your mouth shut. Here’s to hoping Felix loses control of one and drills Maddon in the ass the next time they play. I know that is unrealistic.

The M’s seem to be showing that they are at least better than the KCs and Twins of the world. An improvement for sure. I actually have hope for next year. The first time in awhile. I hope the ownership doesn’t just eat the Ichiro money and not move the fences at all. Vargas and Ryan need to stay. Franklin won’t be ready until 2014 at least IMO, and we probably can only count on Hultzen pitching with the M’s in 2013. Possibly Paxton too, but it’s too early to say.

  4. Nate-I think the M’s have shown us glimpses this year of what the future MIGHT hold. The young guys just need to gain consistency. I would love to see them do something with the dead weight on the roster (Figgins, Olivo) and target a veteran bat this off-season. Looking at the season that Willingham has had for Minnesota, in a cavern of a ballpark just like Seattle, makes me wonder if we are capable of a similar signing.

You heard it here first, Zunino either makes the team out of ST next year or gets called up before June.

Olivo and bilbo are gone in 2013. Hopefully!

  6. bbnate420 says:

I didn’t think Zunino had a chance of making the majors min 2013, but he is already at AA. That is crazy. Might be too much to expect him in 2013. I think 2014 for sure. They will have to find a place for Jaso, Montero, and Zunino to play regularly. Either Jaso or Montero starts making some starts at 1st, besides DH.

  7. bbnate420 says:

Carp and Smoak better get their shit together if they want to have a place at 1st!

  8. Here’s a good antidote to Maddon’s act, a good article on Felix’s development and ability. Just ignore the idle speculation about a trade at some point; now is not the time. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2012/baseball/mlb/08/17/felix-hernandez-todd-dybas-perfect-game/index.html?sct=mlb_bf3_a3
