To quote Eminem …

“Guess who’s back, back again. Shady’s back, tell your friends.”

Yep, I will be covering the Mariners the next two days … strangely around the major league baseball trade deadline. But oh well. It can’t be any worse than covering the Seattle City Council.

The major trade speculation surrounding the Mariners has been for one-time closer and current set-up man Brandon League. Reports around baseball have the Giants, Dodgers and Rangers all interested in League. Will the Mariners get anything of significance in return? Probably not. They’d obviously like a hitting prospect. But so would every team.

Lefty Jason Vargas seems to be another likely candidate, but there may be a domino effect needed first where other more valuable starting pitchers like Cliff Lee, Ryan Dempster Matt Garza, Josh Beckett and James Shields need to be traded first.

How about Chone Figgins? Hahaha. He’s not still on the team, is he? He is? Hmm, well, that’s not happening.

As for other trade prospects? Well, I guess if a team wants to go shopping at the metaphorical Dollar Store and find a bargain they may come calling the Mariners. But teams in a true pennant race probably want 1. Felix (not happening despite what Jon Paul Morosi, Ken Rosenthal and Buster Olney writer every so often). 2. Tom Wilhelmsen (not untouchable, but not likely going anywhere), 3. Kyle Seager (mostly as a utility guy, but probably not much value), 4. League, 5. Vargas …. and then the rest.

The deadline is tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Mariners (47-57)

  • 13  Dustin Ackley (L)      2B
  • 55  Michael Saunders (L)   CF
  • 63  Jesus Montero          C
  • 27  John Jaso (L)          DH
  • 15  Kyle Seager (L)        3B
  • 33  Casper Wells           LF
  • 20  Mike Carp (L)          1B
  • 4  Carlos Peguero (L)     RF
  • 26  Brendan Ryan           SS

18  Hisashi Iwakuma        RHP

WTF would you trade Seager? A team poor in hitting trades one of it’s youngest and possibly best hitter at this point?

  2. bbnate420 says:

And yes, Ryan. Bilbo is still on this team for some unknown reason. You’d think he’d be gone if Guti ever comes back, but I’m done expecting this team to make the smart/expected move.

  3. I was listing of the value of what opposing teams would rate the Mariners players. Seager has more value than say, Smoak or Wells.

As the other part of the Figgins stuff was sarcasm

    Divish (Slim Shady),

So I saw your tweet about the city council asking Chris Hansen to pay the rest of Figgins contract. Did he accept?

Not many things surprise me but with Chris Hansen’s proposal I am pretty surprised with the amount of demands and opposition from the council as well as other groups of people in Seattle.

Several years ago there was a Saturday Night Live skit that showed a man walking up to the counter in a mini mart and he purchased a candy bar and handed the guy a ten dollar bill. The teller starts to give him change for a twenty dollar bill. They abruptly stop the skit and then and ask the viewer to guess whether the guy will be honest and let the teller know that he actually only gave him a ten dollar bill or would he keep the twenty and go in his way.

They re-start the skit and the guy immediately gets pissed off that the teller was giving him a twenty. He yells at the guy and tells him that he in fact gave him a hundred dollar bill and he is pissed that the guy is trying to steal his eighty bucks.

Chris Hansen is the teller and the council is the guy purchasing the candy bar.

I got that the Bilbo stuff was sarcasm. ;-)

And I wasn’t necessarily saying that you were advocating trading Seager. I just wouldn’t do it.

You really think League has more value than Vargas?

  6. I see Peguero is back in there. It’s cool enough tonight that they won’t need extra swings from him to keep the air moving; hopefully he’ll make contact early and often.

  7. I don’t know if League has more value than Vargas. I guess it’s in the eye of the beholder … What’s more valuable a reliever that doesn’t get strikeouts or a starter that gives up too many home runs.

  8. dave8557 says:

Please, no quotes from Enima. Dangerous time of year, the trading deadline. Trading Vargas would just be a bad idea, as would trading Seager. The team needs building blocks for next year. Guys like Olivo, Figgins and League will not be returning. Maybe League can fetch a prospect, but that’s about it.

  9. bbnate420 says:

Good point. Seems that a starter would be more valuable than a reliever that doesn’t close though.

  10. bbnate420 says:

I agree dave. Go ahead and trade League and Millwood if you can get something for them. Keep Vargas. They need one other vet SP besides Felix in 2013, IMO.
