The Seattle Mariners find themselves in a unique situation today, asking Felix Hernandez not to stop a losing streak but to complete a four-game sweep of the struggling Kansas City Royals.

Catcher Miguel Olivo will work with Felix, and the lineup behind him includes rookie Trayvon Robinson – a switch-hitter – against lefty Will Smith.  First baseman Mike Carp will try to extend a streak of four consecutive games with an RBI- and no Mariner has had more than a four-game streak all season.

Here’s the lineup:

Dustin Ackley      2B
Casper Wells           RF
Michael Saunders   CF
Jesus Montero          DH
Kyle Seager       3B
Miguel Olivo           C
Mike Carp          1B
Trayvon Robinson   LF
Brendan Ryan           SS
Felix Hernandez        RHP

Looks like Carp may take Smoak’s job. We’ll see if Smoak is competitive and responds.

It’s enough already with Olivo. He can’t hit. He’s a catcher that CANNOT catch!!!!!

  2. The M’s sweep the Royals, despite League’s best effort to give the game away. Another fine performance by King Felix almost wasted.

Not sure how Olivo still has a job. He must have some dirt on Wedge or something.

I guess they didn’t play a game again today?

  4. I suspect Olivo’s still being here is the usual combo of Z being unwilling to admit ti a mistake, & Howie & upChuck being afraid to eat salary. See Figgins, Chone

  5. bbnate420 says:

I don’t think Olivo was necessarily a giant mistake. He had a place here last year, and it’s not like they’re paying him Bilbo money. He just doesn’t have a place on this team, so it’s enough already. Time to roll with Jaso and Montero.

BTW, where does Zunino start next year. High A or AA?

Felix fell victim to the 7 inning, 100 pitch limit mentality yesterday. This is the main reason he will never win 20 games with Seattle.

Now that Ichiro is gone (unfortunately to the Yankees) and Smoak has been sent down, the next step is to release Figgins. I would keep Olivo for the remainder of the year only because Montero is young, and Jaso is not a regular catcher. Maybe next year we’ll see Zunino make the major league roster. That wouldn’t be impossile, as Carlton Fisk jumped to the Red Sox in ’72 from single A.

Wouldn’t count on Zunino in 2013. Hopefully he starts in AA and is successful enough to end the year in AAA. Then we see him in 2014.
