The injury-ravaged Toronto Blue Jays recently signed left-hander Jamie Moyer to a minor league contract. The ultra-veteran pitcher will join the Blue Jays affiliate – the Las Vegas 51s – on Wednesday in Tacoma.

With the way the pitching match-ups stand, Moyer will throw a game during the THREE-game series at Cheney Stadium. And there’s a high chance that Moyer will start Thursday when Mariners top prospect Danny Hultzen makes his home debut.

How is that for coincidence? A pair of lefties with Mariners roots – one is 49 and the other is 23. One has started 638 games at the big league level, the other is hoping to make his first big league start this season.

Hultzen made his Triple A debut on Saturday in Colorado Springs and struggled a little, lasting just three innings, giving up five runs on five hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

Most recently, Moyer (pictured above) had been pitching for the Triple A Norfolk Tides (Orioles), posting a 1-1 record in three starts with a 1.69 ERA. As part of his contract agreement, Moyer asked to be released on Saturday after not being called up by the Orioles and not wanting to spend any more time in Triple A.

Moyer started the season with the Colorado Rockies. He made the starting rotation out of spring training, becoming at age 49, the oldest pitcher in baseball history to earn a win on the mount. He went 2-5 with a 5.70 ERA in 10 starts, before being released in June.

With starter Kyle Drabek lost for the season with elbow surgery and fellow starter Drew Hutchinson (sore elbow) and Brandon Morrow (strained oblique) out for a few weeks, the Blue Jays decided to give the 49-year-old Moyer a shot.

Are the Las Vegas 51’s trying to load up on 51 year olds? That would be a marketing coup.

    …it is only a 3 game series, not 4.

The Rainiers have a 5-game home series in August against the 51s to even out the short series this week.

Just gotta love Jamie Moyer. A true “Class Act”

  5. Sad when a Tacoma game sounds more interesting/entertaining than the Mariners.

I love games at the new Cheney Stadium. It’s better than Safeco.

  7. Must be a sad state of affairs in Seattle when this story makes headlines. Maybe the M’s can make a trade for Moyer and bring back Joey Cora too. Have Dan the Man in the booth with the Bone and talk about 1995 while a crowd of 10,500 watch the M’s loose their 5th straight 2-1.

    tcronk for the win
