Padres 5, Mariners 4: Wedge disappointed with the defense, Felix disappointed with himself

Not a great game. That’s a bad Padres team that the Mariners lost to. Eric Wedge as you will hear above wasn’t happy with his defense. But then again, he had Chone Figgins in left.  We know Mike Carp couldn’t play because of a shoulder issue. So if they start Michael Saunders in left field and Franklin Gutierrez in center, that might be a different outcome.

But it wasn’t just Figgins. Kyle Seager had a hiccup at third, being indecisive on a ground ball. Miguel Olivo struggled to block a tough pitch but made a typical effort at it.

Felix Hernandez was disappointed how he pitched. He allowed the lead-off hitter to reach five of six innings. And it cost him.

Seattle showed some fight at the end. But it never should it got to that point. Between the defense, the lack of execution from Felix, they dug themselves a hole.

  1. When Smoak’s ball died out there in left center, it seemed like a night that wasn’t going to go the M’s way. As the old-timer’s say, that ball was tagged.

Back at ‘em tomorrow, most likely minus Beavan and Liddi. Oh, and sounds like Carp to the DL. So, will Wells and Gutierrez both come up?

Brendan Ryan must be driving Wedge batty. At least he had the presence of mind to pinch hit for him against the righty.

Dicey season for Felix so far. I’m expecting a bounce back in his next outing.

  2. I’d really like to see Olivo gone. Signing him was an awful move, even if he did lead this awful team in HR’s last year.
