A Felix one-hitter and seven runs is enough

Felix Hernandez combined with Steve Delabar on a one-hit shutout, just the third in franchise history, and Kyle Seager had four RBI, including a two-run home run as the Seattle Mariners beat Minnesota tonight, 7-0.

That snapped the Mariners losing streak at seven games.

Felix, who insists he never worries about his team scoring when it doesn’t – making him the only one – was in a 0-0 game through five innings in this one. Having already piled up no decisions in three games in which he’d allowed one run or less, this could easily have been another.

“I never think about it when we don’t score,” Felix insisted. “My job is the same, put zeroes up on the other team. I always think we’re going to score.”

In the sixth inning, with two outs, they did. Seager, who’d grounded into a double play in the fourth inning, had not forgotten.

“(Jason) Marquis was throwing a nasty sinker and getting us to hit ground balls,” Seager said. “I hadn’t forgotten that double play. So when I got the count in my favor, 2-0, I just wanted to make sure I got a ball up. I don’t mind hitting with two outs.”

Seager’s single gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead and had a crowd of 28,437 roaring.

In the seven, the Mariners loaded the bases with no one out, got a sac fly from  Brendan Ryan and a two-run triple from Ichiro. Seager came up with two outs again, and this time hit his fourth home run.

By the numbers, Felix is now 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA. Seager is now batting .297 with eight doubles, four home runs and a team-leading 16 RBI.

The Mariners? They’re 12-17 with the schedule ahead looking no easier, and an offense that managed only seven hits tonight. No, the Mariners still aren’t hitting well.

But yes, give Felix Herandez seven runs and it won’t much matter.

Great to see some hitting in support of King Felix. I wasn’t real happy to see Delabar come on. He’s usually like gas on a fire. But he made it through.

In Delabars last 10 app he has given up 3 ER not what I would call highly flammable.
