Eric Wedge is known for unique lineups, and tonight the Seattle Mariners will undoubtedly irritate some folks.
Facing Oakland and left-hander Tommy Millone, the Mariners will sit two hot hitters – left-handed batting Michael Saunders an Kyle Seager – and load up with right-handers from Casper Wells and Alex Liddi to designated hitter Miguel Olivo, who isn’t yet hitting his weight.
Genius if it works and bold if it does not. Here’s the lineup:
Chone Figgins CF
Dustin Ackley 2B
Ichiro RF
Justin Smoak 1B
Jesus Montero C
Alex Liddi 3B
Miguel Olivo DH
Casper Wells LF
Brendan Ryan SS
Hector Noesi RHP
Am I the only one who’s sick of watching Figgins repeatedly show he’s incapable of making routine outfield plays?
The entire media seems to be giving him a free pass on his D, because he had 3 or 4 ACCEPTABLE games with the bat.
I’m also bet you his ba will be around .230 within 2 weeks.
There is NO place for him on this team (except maybe at first, where he’d only be blocking Liddi. (I continue to believe Smoak is also a bust & the Lee trade was AWFUL).
It’s time to write this one off, Jack.

In return for three players traded to the Philles (all of whom are now struggling in the minors), the Mariners get Lee on a one year contract….which Z then parlayed into the Rangers deal where the Mariners received this year’s #4 pitcher (Beavan) and, at the time, a highly regarded 1B.
I don’t understand the anger at this trade. Lee was not going to sign a contract with Seattle. Z essentially traded three players with no future in the organization for a starting pitcher and 1B.

But Z could have gotten Montero for Lee on the same day. And am I the only one that keeps wondering why Edge keeps sitting hot bats?

As it turns out, the Mariners received both Smoak and Montero….and also #3 (Noesi) and #4 (Beavan) pitchers.
Patience is a virtue in baseball. We are all starving for a winner after the Bavasi years, but don’t demand bread once sitting down at the table or you’ll have no room for the filet mignon that is to come later.

This blog is now three days old. Nothing going on with the Mariners in that time? I wonder what the Seattle Times is publishing….though I loathe the windBaker.

Hopefully Larry will make it to the park tonight. If not, I’ll report here–I’m going! (If nothing else will secure Larry’s job, that will.)
