Alex Liddi

The Seattle Mariners got down to their reopening day roster today by cutting left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and outfielder Carlos Peguero – opening spots on the roster that allowed rookies like Alex Liddi, Erasmo Ramirez and Lucas Luetge to stick.

Peguero joined the team after outfielder Mike Carp was injured in Japan and placed on the disabled list. The team kept three outfielders – Casper Wells, Michael Saunders and Icihro Suzuki – and will use Chone Figgins in the outfield as needed.

Liddi, the Italian who played first base and third this spring, batted .370 in 15 games, driving in 13 RBI. Peguero hit .294 with five home runs and 13 RBI.

Both Peguero and Furbush were optioned to Tacoma and should be there for opening night tomorrow.

  1. After Liddi’s double boot at first yesterday, I thought they might send him down and keep Peguero. When you look at Liddi as a temporary roster replacement for Carp, and consider the importance of Peguero continuing to get daily AB’s, this move makes sense.

Speaking of making sense: thanks, Larry, for continuing with straight, insightful coverage and avoiding the “sky is falling” sensationalism. This team is a work in progress, heading up, in my opinion. I want to watch it unfold without every zephyr that runs past the organization being treated like a hurricane. We get enough of that whenever it threatens to snow around here; don’t need it on the sports pages/blogs.

Again, Larry, thanks for delivering the goods.

Liddi hit, Peguero didn’t (again). See you tomorrow at Cheney. Hope it rains.

I don’t argue with the move, but .294 and five homeruns is hitting.

  4. Yep. Simplicity is good, but this one was a bit more complicated. Peguero struck out more than Liddi and didn’t have the same patience at the plate; and, four for five in his final spring game jacked up his average. But to say Peguero didn’t hit…you found the hole in that cheese, wabub.

    Amen to that!

Peguero is going to destroy AAA pitchers. Not saying he shouldn’t have been sent down at this point in time, but he’s going to crack some serious bombs.

  6. I’d like to see Liddi play, not sit on the bench. Problem is Seager also needs to play every day.

  7. wabubba67 says:

Liddi and Peguero are both strikeout machines at this stage in their development. Both need to play regularly in AAA.
