Catcher Chris Gimenez was non-tendered by the Mariners on Monday and then re-signed to a major league contract on Wednesday.

Gimenez was a free agent for all of two days, but Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said the team always wanted to keep him.

“We had every intention of re-signing Chris,” Zduriencik said. “There was just some procedural stuff that required us to non-tender him before we negotiated a new deal for 2012.”

With today’s transaction, the Mariners 40-man roster is now at 37 players.

Gimenez, who turns 29 on Dec. 27, appeared in 24 games for the Mariners after missing two months of the season with a strained oblique. His versatility – he started at three positions in 2011, catcher, first base and left field, is a plus.

Do they have to put him on the 40 man roster?

  2. Yahoo says the M’s are likely signing Munenori Kawasaki

  3. Seattle Times is also confirming the Kawasaki signing (minor league contract).

  4. TNT, I’m getting closer & closer to switching to the Times. It seems I’ve been doing your work for you lately.

    2 mariners stories:

Several sites are reporting a strong likelihood that George Sherill is coming back though it is not confirmed.

A much bigger story per the payroll issues: The Times is reporting that while the team is cutting payroll & the “official” Forbes team value is 449 mil; the Chris Larson divorce has it appraised at either $551 mil (Larson) or 770 min 9his wife’s appraisers). As even Larson is admitting it’s worth at least more than 101 mil more than previously disclosed us fans are really getting screwed.

TNT: I’m coming up for yearly sub renewal. If you wish to keep me & others like me, let’s pick up the reporting. Reassign Divish to the Mariners, reinstate Larue to full time (it’s obvious his hours have been cut) & rehire music reviewer Eric & restaurant reviewer Ed Murietta as a START.

This newspaper has gone from high quality to small town in the last 2-3 years, & the quality drop off has been HUGE.

This paper has gone SO DOWNHILL in the last 2 years.

  5. If they DON’T get there wallet!!

  6. Rangers win Darvish.

moo, your hearsay is more often than not, way off base (nice baseball pun) So if you gotta go. Go.

  8. FB, I’m not making it up. Everything I’ve posted has either been from Shannon Dreyer (Kiro), Larry Stone (Seattle Times), Geoff Baker (Seattle Times) or sports.

And I am likely going to let my sub expire in March. Hope you enjoy the DEAD blog. When Divish was here, we had a ton of regulars, & I don’t remember you being one of them unless you’ve changed your handle.
