For Casper Wells, one pitch has been a problem

Rookie outfielder Casper Wells came to the Seattle Mariners as part of the Doug Fister trade with Detroit, then hit home runs in four consecutive games at Safeco Field – the kind of thing that got everyone’s attention.

Then former Mariner and current Toronto Blue Jay Brandon Morrow hit Wells on the tip of his nose with a 97-mph fastball

Wells has gone 4-for-27 since, with one home run and two RBI.

Is there a correlation? You bet.

“Today, I saw a lot of off-speed stuff, and my approach wasn’t very good,” Wells said of his Sunday, when he was 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

But overall?

“I’ve got to get back to basics,” he said. “My head is jumping all around up there.”

But that fastball at his face, has it had a lingering impact?

“I don’t want to use that as an excuse,” Wells said. “But it definitely took me out of my comfort zone. It’s something I’ve got to work on, keeping my head in there. That pitch is still on my mind, at times.”

Overall, Wells is batting .258 this season with 10 home runs and 26 RBI in 186 at-bats.

Some Mariners notes:

  • First baseman Justin Smoak, on the DL with a broken nose since Aug. 12, will begin a rehab assignment tonight with the Tacoma Rainiers.
  • Ichiro Suzuki’s chase for an 11th consecutive 200-hit season is an uphill fight. With two hits today, he has 151 with 29 games to play.
  • Add Ichiro: His 11-game hitting streak is the 40th of his career, tying Pete Rose for fifth place on baseball’s all-time list.
  • Infielder Kyle Seager has a career-best nine game hitting streak, and he’s batted .500 during it.
  • Mike Carp was given his first day off since July 21. Expect him back in the lineup tomorrow.

  1. Larry, why has Vargas fallen apart?

  2. IchiroReport says:

Ichiro does have 151 hits, needing 49 more for his 11th-year consecutive 200. However, the Mariners have 30 more games, not 29. There is a make-up game to be played vs. the Indians.

    Thanks, Brandon….

Here’s hoping Casper can get back to his old self.

It’s going to be interesting watching Smoak try to get back to HIS old self, too.

  4. Ichiro getting his 200 would be bad. Better that his streak gets broken so he can forget about bouncing balls in the dirt to beat out and focus on driving the ball, a skill he definitely has.
