Baseball executives used to never claim a player in order to prevent a trade. Times have changed a bit…but not much. If someone had claimed Vargas they would still have to work out a trade with Seattle or else Seattle could pull him back from waivers…or let the other team have him for the remainder of his salary (think the best possible scenerio with Figgins).

If true, that would likely explain why we traded Fister rather than Vargas (which I felt was a big mistake). I.e., nobody wanted Vargas.
