About 15 minutes before first pitch, the Mariners announced that third baseman Chone Figgins was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right hip flexor. To fill his spot, infielder Kyle Seager was recalled from Triple A Tacoma.
Figgins met with team doctors before the game, but after manager Eric Wedge talked with the media.
The Rainiers played today and were preparing to go on the road to Albuquerque. Sources said Seager was on his way here and would be here for first pitch.
Seager, 23, appeared in 7 games with the Mariners from July 6-21 batting .136 (3×22) with 1 run scored. In 89 games between AA Jackson and AAA Tacoma this season, Seager is batting .338 (124×367) with 33 doubles, 3 triples, 7 home runs and 54 RBI. Since returning to Tacoma on July 22, Seager appeared in 12 games (including today), and hit .314 (16×51) with 8 runs, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 5 RBI.
Figgins, 33, is batting .188 (54×288) with 24 runs scored, 11 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 15 RBI in 81 games. This is his first trip to the disabled list since 2008 when he battled a right hamstring strain.
