The Mariners have made their first trade over what is expected to be a mildly busy few days for them, sending Rainiers outfielder Ryan Langerhans to the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash considerations.

Langerhans, 31, was batting .313 (67×214) with 10 doubles, 16 home runs and 37 RBI in 57 games with the Rainiers. He appeared in 117 games for the Mariners over the last three seasons (2009-2011). He hit .173 (9×52) with 3 home runs in 19 games with the Mariners this season.

The transaction clears a roster spot for newly acquired outfielder Wily Mo Pena to join the Tacoma roster.

If you think about it, the Mariners gave up Mike Morse, who is a better hitter than anyone on the current team not named Dustin Ackley, for Langerhans, and now they have traded Langerhans for cash. Hmm, it’s safe to say Jack Zdruiencik has made better trades in his career.

  1. & from what I’ve read, it also appears Langerhans is having a better season than Pena.

  2. SharkHawk says:

The Morse trade was idiotic at the time and reaches all-time levels of idiotic with what he was ultimately turned into. A freaking roster spot. Brilliant move Z-dog. Brilliant move. The even worse part is that he kept Langerhans around so long trying to justify his piss poor trade. I realize you had to cut your losses and move on, but you never should have traded Morse in the first place. He’s versatile…. just like the kind of guy the M’s supposedly covet right now. Why was he traded? Because he wasn’t a “Z Guy”? Who is? Slow-swinging dudes that happen to be essentially out of shape, never weres and have high strike out rates apparently (i.e. Cust, Wilkerson et all).
