Ever want to be in a hot dog-eating competition? Me either.

But at least eight members of the Seattle-area media thought it would be fun, or at least a good thing to do for charity. So before the Mariners took the field against the San Diego Padres on Sunday at Safeco Field, the Mariners’ put on their inaugural Chowdown for Charity hot dog-eating contest.

Contestants were given two minutes to eat as many hot dogs as possible. The winner earned the respect of his soft-stomached competitors and $1,000 to the charity of his choice.

The News Tribune’s Ryan Divish — he’s wearing the Montana T-shirt — was one of the contestants. The others were KCPQ’s Bill Wixey, KJR-950 AM’s Kevin Shockey, 710-AM Mike Salk, Seattle Times’ Danny O’Neil, King-5’s Chris Egan, KOMO-4’s Mike Dardis and’s Jim Caple.

Shockey won easily, downing four hot dogs. He took the Kobayashi-approach, double-fisting dogs and dunking the buns in water. Shockey ate for Northwest Literacy, a noble non-profit foundation that promotes youth literacy, but probably not eating competitions, given America’s child obesity epidemic.

The other seven ate two or fewer hot dogs. Weak.

Here’s video of the competition:

Finally, because I believe journalists should be held accountable for what they do on the job, here are pre- and post-competition photos of Divish’s dogs.

That's a big pile of hot dogs.
That's still a big pile of hot dogs.

Divish was credited with finishing two hot dogs, though he claims it was actually two-and-a-half.

“I feel I let down the readers of The News Tribune and the Mariners Blog,” Divish said, after emptying his stomach in the press box restroom.

Wow, pretty impressive display from Shockey.

I couldn’t find Jim Caple though. Ryan just for a second at first I thought he was you (there was a resemblance), but then the Montana shirt registered.

And I also like how they prepared 20 hotdogs per person. Man, that Kobayashi is a monster. (Guy is pretty slim though!)

2 hot dogs is like the Mendoza line of hot dog eating contests. Just sayin’…
