The rosters for the 2011 All-Star game were announced and the Mariners had two players named to the squad that will be managed by Ron Washington. But neither of the players were Ichiro Suzuki.

The 10-time all-star outfielder failed to make the team.

Instead, two pitchers – Felix Hernandez and Brandon League will be going to Phoenix. Although per MLB rules, Felix likely won’t be able to pitch since he’s scheduled to start that Sunday before the game. And Mariners manager Eric Wedge said that he won’t be adjusting his starting rotation.

Felix suggested that Michael Pineda could throw his inning if they don’t allow him to pitch.

Hernandez, 25, has been the anchor of the best starting pitching staff in the American League. Hernandez is 8-7 with a 3.35 ERA (48 ER, 129.0 IP) in a Major League best (tied) 18 starts. Among AL starters he ranks 3rd in strikeouts (124) and 4th in innings pitched (129.0). This will be Hernandez’s second All-Star game, as he pitched a scoreless inning in 2009 in St. Louis.

League, 28, is tied for the American League lead with 21 saves (with Mariano Rivera). He is 0-4 with a 3.48 ERA (13 ER, 33.2 IP) in a team-high 36 appearances. The Hawaiian native heads into today’s game with 18 consecutive appearances without allowing an earned run, and has converted his last 12 save opportunities. This is League’s first All-Star selection.

  1. I agree Ichiro is not an all star player this year.

Pineda, Fister & Vargas should have been given serious consideration, though; & bedard also if it wasn’t for the injury.
