Busy morning for a team that learned last  night that catcher Chris Gimenez and pitcher Erik Bedard  were hurt and Miguel Olivo needed an MRI – forcing the Seattle Mariners to make a couple of roster moves to play their game today.

Veteran Josh Bard, who missed the last three games in Tacoma  after losing the nail from a toe, was selected from the Rainiers and dropped into the Mariners starting lineup.  His backup in Tacoma, Jose Yepez, was also selected from the Tacoma roster.

Gimenez, who caught the last four innings last night iin severe pain, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. Bedard, who started on Monday, was placed on the 15-day DL to make room for Yepez.

To make room for Bard on the 40-man roster, the Mariners designated left-hander Edward Paredes for assignment – meaning he could be lost to any big-league team making a waiver claim. To make room for Yepez, the Mariners designated right-handed pitcher Chaz Roe for assignment..

Meanwhile, Olivo – who left the game last night with a strained muscle in his left thigh – was undergoing an MRI, the results of which could determine whether Seattle needs to make another move.

Throughout the game last night and today, the emergency reserve catcher – infielder Adam Kennedy - was on high alert.

“I was in full blown panic mode,” Kennedy admitted this morning. “I’ve never caught, ever, but somebody had to volunteer back in spring training and I did. I caught Brandon League between innings in Minnesota and he almsot broke my thumb.”
