Miguel Olivo was in good spirits in the clubhouse this morning. He has nice couple of raspberry dirt burns above and below his right eye.

“I got into fight, that’s what I’m telling people,” he said.

Yeah, he got into a fight with the dirt past first base and the dirt won

If you missed it last night, Olivo tried a head first slide into first base. It didn’t work so well, he hit the bag with his chest and then slammed face first into the dirt. It could have been much worse. Olivo watch the highlights and understood he avoided a serious injury.

“It was a little scary,” he said. “I was worried a little bit. But when I got up, I knew everything was ok. It was a scary moment. A lot people think I could have broken my neck. I’m glad only that little thing happened.”

The little thing – the two burns – still look pretty uncomfortable. It’s one of those type of burns that really stings when you take a shower.

“Oh yeah, it burned,” he said. “It burns right now. It’s alright.  A little pain is good. It lets you know you are alive.”

Maybe Olivo should work on his head first sliding. He’s not very adept at it. He talked about an incident last year in Chicago … check this out.

Yep, he needs some work on that.

“I came out of the game, but I played the next day,” he said. “It was the same thing. I don’t know maybe I should slide feet first.”

Olivo admitted its faster running through the bag, but he was caught up in the moment.

“In the game, in the adrenaline of the game, I saw Jeter coming and I just threw myself at the bag,” Olivo said.

Brendan Ryan, who is easily crazy enough to dive head first into first, said there are reasons for doing it, besides when a throw is high coming to first and you are avoiding a tag.

“You know it can make more tough for an umpire,” he said.

And last night?

“That sends a message to everyone that, ‘Hey, we aren’t giving in, we are going to fight to win,’” Ryan said.

Here’s today’s lineups. It’s a fairly heavy right-handed lineup with lefty CC Sabathia on the mound. Michael Saunders is in the lineup though because Mike Wilson is at DH.

Olivo plays the game with heart and guts, but you have to keep your heart and guts inside your body and not spill them all over the basepath!

    Figgins will go 2-4 today.

My preseason pick to click this season was Brendan Ryan. Looking good, Brendan!
