Mariners 2, Red Sox 0: How did they do it?

I’m sitting here in the press box at Fenway Park trying to figure out how the Mariners got to this point. They are 5-0 on the road trip and have a realistic chance of sweeping it with Felix Hernandez starting on Sunday.

Raise your hand if at the beginning of the week you thought a sweep was possible? Anyone who is raising their hand, put it down cause you are lying to me and yourself.

No one expected this.

And I’m still not sure how they’ve done it. Look the wins in Detroit were a little

Milton Bradley ejected in third inning

Milton Bradley celebrated his first hit in 22 at-bats by being ejected from the game.

Bradley gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead in the third by doubling to left and scoring Ichiro Suzuki.  The Mariners got a bad break when Miguel Olivo appeared to beat out a ground ball to third that Kevin Youkilis hesitated on. Replays show that the play wasn’t even close.  He was safe by two steps

Mariners manager Eric Wedge came out to argue the call with first base ump Todd Tichenor. And he did so quite vehemently. Shortly after Wedge left the field, Bradley,

Pregame notes: Aardsma still not ready, Felix slated to start Friday

It appears that David Aardsma is going to need a few more appearances with Triple A Tacoma before he’s ready to come back and pitch for the Mariners.

Aardsma was less than stellar. He faced four batters in the eighth inning, striking out two while hitting one and giving up a double. He threw 25 pitches, 14 for strikes. He was lifted before the inning ended because he reached his pitch count.

Mariners manager Eric Wedge wasn’t too concerned.

“It was like 25 degrees,” Wedge said. “He hasn’t had any cooperation with the weather. We are

Jack Cust: “That’s the swing I’m trying to do every time.”

With deadlines and such, we weren’t able to talk to Jack Cust last night after the game. The Mariners DH didn’t appear for some time after the game, in which he provided the game-winning hit.

But he talked before today’s game about his big RBI double off of Bobby Jenks.

“It felt good,”  he said. “That’s the swing I’m looking for on a pitch  middle-inside, taking it the other way. That’s the swing I’m trying to do every time. It felt good to get a big hit there for the team.”

Cust knows he’s struggling. He knows that he’s not

Wilson back in the lineup, Olivo still at cleanup; Wakefield to start Sunday

UPDATE 1:35 p.m.: We just received an e-mail saying that knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will start Sunday’s game against Felix Hernandez instead of Clay Buchholz.

Manager Eric Wedge said Miguel Olivo would get a day off sometime in this series. If it happens, it will be tomorrow. Olivo is in there catching and batting fourth. On this road trip he’s 8-for-18 with two homers and four RBI.

Jack Wilson is back at second base after being bothered by a scratched eye. He came in last night in the ninth inning for defensive purposes.

Mariners (12-15)

  2. Chone Figgins 3B

Wedge sets up rotation for Rangers series

Mariners manager Eric Wedge was contemplating how to slot his rotation for the upcoming Rangers series with an off day on Monday. He was trying to balance on keeping people on regular rest and maybe give pitchers an extra day. He did that for Erik Bedard and it seemed to help as he won his next start and his fastball showed some improved velocity.  So far it looks like Wedge will stay the same and everyone will get the extra day of rest

So for the upcoming homestand starting on Tuesday, this is the likely pitching matchups.

Tuesday — LHP

Mariners 5, Red Sox 4: A baseball juggernaut!

BOX SCORE

Ok, well maybe it’s a little to soon to label the Mariners a juggernaut. Really  it wasn’t that long ago that they were struggling to score two runs a game and looking lost in the field.

But over the past week and half, the Mariners have looked something beyond competent, they look competitive.

They won their fourth game in a row and they won their 8th game in the last 12.

Big congratulations to Jason Vargas, who picked up his first win since August 14, 2010. He was winless in his last 13
