Adam Kennedy, a non-roster invitee, has won a spot on the bench of the 2011 Seattle Mariners.
Kennedy, 35, took the roster spot of infielder Josh Wilson, released earlier today. Though he cannot play shortstop, Kennedy can play anywhere else in the infield and even played a few spring games in the outfield.
“He’s versatile, he gives you a professional at- at and he knows how to play the game,” manager Eric Wedge said.
The decision left the Mainers with 13 healthy pitchers and and 14 position players, although one – outfielder Franklin Gutierrez - seems destined for the disabled list. If there are no further changes, Luis Rodriguez makes the team as a second utility infielder.
Of the 13 pitchers for 12 spots, the last open job belongs to either right-handed rookie Tom Wilhelmsen, who hasn’t pitched above Class A, or lefty Cesar Jimenez, who hasn’t had a clean inning all spring.
Larry, I’ve never heard of Luis Rodriguez. Any background to share?

moo – luis is a 30-year-old veteran infielder who has played with the twins and padres, and batted .296 last year in AAA. he’s one of those scrappy players that can play anywhere in the infield. that said, he batted .182 this spring – josh wilson hit .239 – so there’s been no clear indication why the team went this way. it may change before the opener.
