Josh Wilson, a 30-year-old utility infielder, was released today, bringing the number of healthy bodies in camp for the Seattle Mariners to …. 26.
That’s one more than they’ll have when the 2011 season begins for them on Friday, and there’s a suspcion that general manager Jack Zduriencik is looking for a right-handed hitting outfielder.
If not, the final decision appears to come down to two players – left-handed pitcher Cesar Jimenez or infielder Luis Rodriguez.
Jimenez is out of options, meaning if they don’t keep him they almost certainly lose him. Rodrguez is a non-roster invitee who can play shortstop off the bench – something utilityman Adam Kennedy can no longer do.
If no deal comes along, no position player Jack Z. would rather becomes available, figure the Mariners will either cut Jimenez, who’s had a bad spring, or keep him and send Tom Wilhelmsen to the minors.
