Franklin Gutierrez: Back in center

Three days into the Cactus League schedule and Eric Wedge is looking at combinations – seeing just what the Seattle Mariners have to play with.

Today, he gets Franklin Gutierez back in center field, but more interestingly he gets Milton Bradley (left field) and Jack Cust (designated hitter) into the same batting order. He has veteran Jack Wilson at shortstop, rookie Dustin Ackley at second and he versatile Adam Kennedy at first, as much to get him at-bats as anything.

Seattle hosts Texas today, a chance to see the American League champions and see how they fare against lefty Nate Robertson and crew. The Mariners go in 1-0-1 for the spring.

The lineup:

Ichiro, RF
Chone Figgins, 3B
Milton Bradley, LF
Jack Cust, DH
Miguel Olivo, C
Adam Kennedy, 1B
Franklin Gutierrez, CF
Dusin Ackley, 2B
Jack Wilson, SS
Nate Robertson, P

No radio today? Probably just as well. I tolerated Dave Sims and his stumbling and bumbling, but once Rick Rizz took his turn I only lasted about 45 seconds into it. Is it truly essential to recall 1977 and Diego Seguis first pitch? Again? At least I didn’t have to hear his “fly away” call.
