OK, it’s spring – Mariners talk baseball

Day One in spring training revolves around guys showing up, taking off their clothes – not as exciting as it sounds – and taking physicals.

Still, baseball can occasionally break out, and in Peoria today it has.

In one of the covered batting cages, Justin Smoak, Dustin Ackley and Jack Wilson took a little BP and, afterward, hunkered down on overturned ball buckets and started talking … baseball. They laughed about pitchers who’d made them look bad, good and bad at-bats and had a fine time.

On one of the fields, pitchers Garrett Olson, Blake Bevan and Jamey Wright played catch, zipping the all around like three guys who’d been throwing since December. They sat in the clubhouse afterward, waiting to take their physicals, talking … baseball.

Hey, for a team that doesn’t take the field until tomorrow – and then only pitchers and catchers – it was fun watching. And fun listening to.

  1. Today is one of the best days of the year. Baseball’s just around the corner. The idea that baseball players are talking about pitchers that beat them, or how to get guys out rather than reviewing police reports is just about the best news there is. Baseball-nothing like it.

The main question is whether the Mariners can avoid losing 100 games again.
