I was worried about that as well going into last season. They were interested in "treading water". However, some of the moves they have made lately tell me that isn't the case. They realize full-well that that the fans are not showing up. That revenues are shrinking. That just having a jewel of a ballpark that isn't so brand new anymore won't do the job anymore. They need to win.

At some point a team like the Mariners has to retool and go through a bit of a growth period. Teams like New York, Boston, and even Atlanta can continue to stay competitive nearly every year because they don't have to really develop a farm system except for to trade for guys that are making way too much money. It skews everything as they don't have down seasons really. But other teams can win, and have proven they can. The Yankees don't win a lot of World Series if you consider what they put in. They win a lot of games and are always in the playoffs, but that is the way the system is set up.

The M's ownership will NEVER be like that. So they have to scrap it and this is the year. Now they need to build it right to have some sustained success. Bill Bavasi was NOT the man for the job. Maybe Jack Z isn't either. We'll find out this year. If we don't see growth then he should be gone, but not before Chuck and the Duck go first, so that somebody else can choose the new honcho.

I think with the team in it's current state, we may see an all-time record for losses.

That being said, if this helps the team get better in the future, I'm okay.

I'm worried that the Mariners never get better and the old guard doesn't care as long as they draw 2 million fans

BTW, my caption for the Wedge picture:
"I saw them! They were green and this tall!"

I don't think anybody has any huge expectations for this year, which is good. It is a rebuilding year and everybody knows it and the organization admits it. It's about time. They just seem to have a guy who is right for the job in rebuilding. He took Cleveland through a rebuilding and did an admirable job. I think he's the right kind of coach for the situation they now fully admit to being in. They are looking 3-4 years down the road which makes sense. It had to happen at some point.

He wants a team full of Edgars, and that will be fine by me. A guy who wants to be at the plate, who wants the challenge, but is a cool cat, and a leader by example. More of that. That's exactly what this team needs. Chone Figgins isn't a leader now matter how long he's been in the league. Felix is a leader because he wants the ball and nothing phases him. I think Ichiro is a leader regardless of what people say because he wants the bat in his hands, he wants the ball hit at him, and he wants to be the winning run on second. He wants those things and lives for those situations. Not every leader needs to be a loudmouth full of nifty cliches like Buhner was. It is great to have guys like that to keep a team loose and to keep guys focused. But you need a good mix of people. I think Wedge will be a fine manager. He reminds me very much of Hargrove and Rene Lachemann. Both I thought did a fine job building a team that needed some building. Of course I thought Wakamatsu was a good manager too. So what do I know?

I think Eric Wedge will be good manager, thought only problem I have is playing favorite with veteran & not give young guys a chance, If report are out their that this team is on schedule to lose more than 101 than to play guys like Franklin & michael Pineda in rotation it not like this team could get any worse than the 101 team like last yr.
