UPDATE 10:55 a.m.: a source confirmed that the deal is basically done. But it may not be officially announced for a while, a few more details still need to be worked out, including a physical and other logistics.

Also remember, the Mariners only have one spot open on the 40-man roster, which they are going to use for Thursday’s Rule V draft, where they hold the No. 2 pick. They will make a selection and then sit down and look at the 40-man roster and decide which player they will designate for assignment to make room for Cust. My guess would be LHP Cesar Jimenez.

.

Oakland A’s beat writer Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle just tweeted that power-hitting designated hitter Jack Cust is close to signing a free agent contract with the Mariners.

JP Morosi is reporting that the deal is for 1-year with a base salary of $2.5 million. I guess that’s fair. Cust made $2.65 million last season, which is one of the reason the A’s non-tendered him – because he was likely to get a pay raise up over $3.5 million in arbitration.

Cust is basically a DH, though he did play outfield (albeit not well) for the A’s last season.

Not familiar with Cust?

Well, basically, he’s a lefty hitter that can hit home runs, strikes out a lot and walks a lot.

It earned him the nickname: “Three true outcomes

Cust started last season in Triple A, but was called up and appeared in 112 games, hitting .242 with 13 homers and 52 RBI. He had 68 walks and 127 strikeouts.

And regardless of what people say, you cannot play him in the outfield. He’s a disaster out there. He has no range and can’t throw. Basically he would make Raul Ibanez look like Franklin Gutierrez defensively. He has a -22.3 UZR rating for his career. He’s a DH and a bat off the bench.

  1. Great, another WHO?

This sounds like a wonderful acquisiion, one that should encourage people to buy season tickets to witness a Mariner run for the playoffs. Cust will be part of a modern-day murderer’s row.

Wow really?….Oh wait I see what you did there.

It’s time to rid ourselves of the #51 curse. we need some power from that position. If he weren’t the owners lap dog he’d be gone. His selfishness, lack of leadership in the club house, and his ridiculous salary for that position. No other team would tolerate his wants and needs. When he goes we will flourish.

  5. Hmmm, comes to play every day. Performs offensively and defensively at a very high level. Doesn’t get hurt much. Doesn’t get in trouble. Yeah, get rid of him.

  6. 1. Is Cust really an upgrade over Branyan?

    2. I assume (& hope) this means we’re releasing Uncle Milty & eating his salary.
