Upton’s no-trade clause? Not so fast!

Ah, ’tis the hot stove time of year, when rumors fly and theories become fact, then – poof – disappear into the air.

Yeserday, it was reported by that Arizona outfielder Justin Upton had a no-trade clause in his contract (true), and that the Seattle Mariners were one of the teams he’d listed in it (not so true).

Today, Reynolds Sports, the agency that works for Upton, let it be known via Twitter  that the client’s no-trade clause does not include Seattle.

What’s it mean? Well, if the Mariners and Diamondbacks can agree on a deal, Upton could be dealt without having to renegotiate his contract. Arizona general manager Kevin Towers said he’ll know by the end of the winter meetings next month whether Upton will be dealt or not. And rumors are flying – and you know how accurate rumors are in Novemer! – that Seattle would have to begin a trade offer with Dustin Ackley, and probably include either Justin Smoak or Michael Pineda.

You can assume Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik has spoken to Towers. What Jack Z. will not do is talk to the press about any of this. What gets written and distributed as absolute fact, however, must occasionally amuse him.

    Dear Mariners,
Don’t do it!!!! Let’s keep our prospects for a change and let them learn the game. Even if only one panned out, we’re even.

No! No! No! Too much to give up! Memo to Mariners: You’re not a winning team! Take the time to become a winning team by developing your young talent and win for many years instead of trying to fill all the holes with bargain basement players and extras and claim that you’re trying to win every year. Rebuilding can be exciting as the youngsters develop and improve. I think we can live with that for a few years.

Upton + Safeco Field = Fools Gold

I thought the Bavasi era was over….sheesh. Please do not trade our future Mariners superstars for what would essentially be “fools gold”, the kind Bavasi used to go digging after (maybe he was digging for clams, if he was he certainly found some).

No way Jack Z deals any of those players. Ackley and Smoak are the kind of hitters the M’s need to win at Safeco. They are also two of the cornerstones of Jack’s legacy with the Mariners. No way he trades them for Upton.

If it were Bavasi running the show, then yes, I can see those deals being made. Like Adam Jones for Bedard. I don’t see the Z-man being stupid.

  6. Hope you’re all right & I’m wrong, but so far i am very unimpressed with Smoak’s ability.
