The Seattle Mariners pared their 40-man major league roster to 29 over the last five weeks, shedding what some might consider dead wood to make room for more promising talent throughout the farm system.
By 9 p.m. tonight, they’ll have added minor league players to that roster to keep them safe from December’s Rule 5 draft. General manager Jack Zduriencik is making final decisions as you read this. An announcement is expected later today.
Here are the 29 players currently on the 40-man roster:
Pitchers (13): David Aardsma, Dan Cortes, Doug Fister, Luke French, Felix Hernandez, Shawn Kelley, Brandon League, Garrett Olson, Edward Paredes, David Pauley, Ryan Rowland-Smith, Jason Vargas and Anthony Varvaro.
Catchers (2): Rob Johnson and Adam Moore.
Infielders (9): Dustin Ackley, Mike Carp, Chone Figgins, Jose Lopez, Matt Mangini, Justin Smoak, Matt Tuiasosopo, Jack Wilson and Josh Wilson.
Outfielders (5): Milton Bradley, Franklin Gutierrez, Greg Halman, Michael Saunders and Ichiro Suzuki.
