The first September call-up for the Seattle Mariners is left-hander Ryan Rowland-Smith, who was  brought up from Tacoma and taken off the 15-day disabled list, joining the Mariners bullpen, for now.

Ryan Rowland-Smith

Rowland-Smith, 27, hadn’t pitched since  July, but made five rehab starts with the Rainiers, going 2-4 with a 5.11 ERA . In 22 games, 19 starts with the Mariners, Rowland-Smith went 1-10 with a 6.96 ERA  before going on th Ie disabled list.

For the year, he has allowed 40 walks while striking out 39 and 129 hits, and said before leaving for Tacoma he was losr on the mound. Now, in September, the Mariners hope he has found himself.

The Rainers are in the Pacific Coast League playoffs, but once they’re through, Rob Johnson, Justin Smoak and others – perhaps Greg Halman, reliever Danny Cortes and Tug Hulett – will join Seattle.

Michael Pineda, the right-hander shut down for the season as a precaution, is expected to join the Mariners Saturday.

Their lineup against right-hander Fausto Carmona:

  • Ichiro Suzuki, RF
  • Chone Figgins, 2B
  • Franklin Gutierrez, CF
  • Russell Branyan, DH
  • Jose Lopez, 3B
  • Casey Kotchman, 1B
  • Adam Moore, C
  • Michael Saunders, LF
  • Josh Wilson, SS
  • Luke French

  1. I can’t imagine why they’d RRS to start. He sucks & he sucked in aaa. If he takes anyone’s slot IT BEST BE Pauley’s, but even Pauley is better then RRS.
