The Colorado Rockies have interest in Jose Lopez, or so the rumor mill has it today, and it’s hard to imagine Seattle Mariners fans not opening the door to see Mr. Lopez out at this point.

Jose Lopez

Undoubtedly the worst cleanup hitter in baseball this year – not his fault entirely, since he shouldn’t be the cleanup hitter – Lopez would not bring anything of value in return. Should he be dealt, however, his absence would open the Mariners infield up to change.

Matt Tuiasosopo to third base for September? Probably – moving Chone Figgins at this point in the season doesn’t seem likely.

What are the chances? Slim. Rumors are just that, rumors. Unless or until Lopez moves on, he’ll play third and bat fourth for Seattle – neither of which is a good thiing. Today, however, he will bat fifth. Baby steps.

Tonight’s Mariners lineup:

  • Ichiro Suzuki, RF
  • Chone Figgins, 2B
  • Franklin Gutierrez, CF
  • Russell Branyan, DH
  • Jose Lopez, 3B
  • Casey Kotchman, 1B
  • Michael Saunders, LF
  • Adam Moore,  C
  • Josh Wilson, SS
  • Felix Hernandez, P

  1. Might there really be a Santa Claus??!

  2. Feel free to correct me if my perception is wrong, but i think the reason i resent Lopez so much is I have a perception that he is extremely talented but not willing to do the work to utilize his talent while making a huge paycheck.

I think it would behoove this team greatly to pay the Rockies or any other team for that matter, to take Lopez. Maybe it’ll do him a world of good to play in the thin air of Coors Field.
