The Seattle Mariners saw batting practice rained out and are told there are ‘windows of opportunity’ today to get a game in against the New York Yankees and CC Sabathia.
Facing Sabathia on a nice dry day is tough enough. Hitting him in the rain? Yikes! Still, that may be the task at hand today, and among the men who’ll have to try it is Matt Tuiasosopo – filling in or an ailing Michael Saunders.
Saunders returned to play yesterday after four days off with a tender right shoulder, then found that swinging the bat with game-intensity hurt enough that he found himself pulling off pitches to guard against the pain.
Saunders won’t bat again on this trip, though he can pinch-run and play defense (he throws left-handed).
“It didn’t bother me in batting practice, but in the game it did,” Saunders said. “I’m going to have an MRI done when we get home Thursday, and if it shows something, I’ll deal with that. If they say it hurts but won’t get worse if I play, I’ll play with it. Every guy in this clubhouse has played with something hurting them. It’s part of the game.”
