As Dusty said in his blog last  night – and thanks, dude, for posting! – Ryan and I were out of pocket when the news broke that Russell Branyan was returning to the Seattle Mariners.

Branyan is flying into Milwaukee today, landing about game time. Don’t expect him in the starting lineup, but he could pinch-hit at some point, stay in the game.

As for Ryan, not sure where he was or what he was doing, but me? When my cell phone starting ringing with the news here, I was neck deep in a summer concert here – ZZ Top, opening for the immortal Tom Petty.

The concert got a late start, and I went to the venue, picked up one ticket at the last minute and had a great time. When the Mariners called, I neither heard the ring nor felt the vibration – hard to believe with people jumping up and down all around me.

Truth be told, I’m not sure I could hear the phone ring today. Great seats, great time , but my God it was loud last night.

Anyway, more on the Branyan thing soon, but it’s obvious it was a move to bolster the Seattle ‘attack.’  and the Mariners will likely slide him into the roster spot of Mike Carp.

With Carp, Casey Kotchman and Mike Sweeney on the roster, that’s too many first baseman – and Josh Wilson and Ryan Langerhans have also played the position this season.

It’ll be good to have Russell back, on and off the field. Great good-natured fellow and, finally, someone pitchers will have to think about in the the Mariners lineup.

i’ve been to Summerfest a couple of times, it’s great fun.

Here are the observations that a scout at Erik’s start last night tweeted. I was wondering, Mr. LaRue, if you could find out if he threw more changeups, besides the one he threw in the first inning? Thanks!

fan – i’m told erik threw 15 changeups, 14 of them for strikes. he had a good curve and hit 93 mph….

  3. VisitingFan says:

Fifteen! That’s half of the number he threw in all of last season. Awesome!

Thanks for finding out Mr. LaRue.
