Top of 1st

Dan Haren has one of the weirdest deliveries. He has that little pause midway through his delivery. But it works for him. He cuts through the line-up of Corey Patterson, Franklin Gutierrez and Casey Kotchman 1-2-3, including a quick strikeout of Kotchman to end the inning.

Bottom of 1st

Well, it wasn’t exactly perfect start next for Cliff Lee, who walked the leadoff hitter Ryan Roberts on five pitches. Lee got a Stephen Drew to ground into a fielder’s choice and Justin Upton to fly out. But Mark Reynolds, who just signed a 3-year, $14.5 million contract, rips a shot up the middle. Jack Wilson lays out to make the play, but the ball bounces out of his glove on the hop. Wilson clearly was miffed he didn’t make the play.

From there, it snowballs a little with Adam LaRoche dumping a single into right to score a run and Chris Young ripping a run-scoring single past a diving Jose Lopez. Lee gets out of the inning by getting Chris Snyder to fly out deep to center.

Lee threw 21 pitches in the inning, 14 of them were strikes.

Top of 2nd

Mike Sweeney continues hit the ball hard, ripping a ground rule double to left off of Haren. He moved to third on Jose Lopez’s groundball out. But Sweeney is stuck there as Ryan Langerhans struck out looking, Dustin Ackley walked and Rob Johnson struck out swinging to end the inning.

Bottom of 2nd

Lee has another tough inning, giving up singles to Drew Macias and Evan Frey. The Macias single was bouncing ball up the middle that seemed destined for the outfield. But 2nd baseman Dustin Ackley showed good range, cutting the ball off, but couldn’t make a throw. Lee later gave up a sac fly to Stepehn Drew for another run, but struck out Justin Upton looking to end the inning.

Jack Wilson leads off with a single and Corey Patterson bunts him over to second.  But he stays there as Gutierrez flies out to left and Kotchman grounds out weekly.

Bottom of 3rd

Lee gets Mark Reynolds to fly out, but LaRoche jumps on the first pitch from Lee for his second hit of the game.

So we have tempers flaring a little. Cliff Lee buzzed the tower on Chris Snyder, sending a fastball up and in on Snyder.  Snyder took exception to it and started walking toward the mound. Benches cleared, but it was mostly jawing. Lee was ejected by home plate umpire Brian Knight.

Here’s the backstory. In the first inning, Lee was covering home on Chris Young’s RBI single. Snyder, who was on deck, ran to the back side of home to tell the runner Mark Reynolds to slide. Snyder laid on the ground telling Ryenolds to slide. Lee didn’t see Snyder there and tripped over him. They both exchanged a few words. And Lee let Snyder know in the next at-bat that it wasn’t ok.

So Lee was ejected and Shawn Kelley is into the game, pitching to Snyder.

I’m not going to lie. It may seem silly, but I like to see that in Lee. He’s competitive.

Snyder gets his revenge as he doubles to left and a run scored, that will be charged to Lee. The inning ends as Macias flies out to center.

Top of 4th

Mike Sweeney leads off with a single, he’s now hitting .800 (12 for 15) and then Lopez follows with a single. Haren then walks Langerhans to load the bases for youngster Dustin Ackley, who lifted a soft fly to left that was deep enough for Sweeney to tag up on and score.  Rob Johnson popped up to shallow center for the second out, while Jack Wilson ground out to end the inning.

Bottom of 4th

Shawn Kelley strikes out two batters looking, allows a single to Stephen Drew. But he’s cut down trying to steal by Johnson.

Top of 5th

Wakamatsu wanted to see if Kelley can work a three-inning stretch, thinking Kelley may be versatile enough to do that during the season. It didn’t end well. Kelley gave up an infield single, walked a hitter and then gave up an RBI single to Adam LaRoche. Chris Young followed with a deep three-run homer to left and then a single to Snyder before being lifted for Luke French. It’s 8-1.

“I was trying to go inside and a couple got away from me. The guy hitting got mad, came toward the mound and I got thrown out of the game in the process. That’s it in a nutshell.”

On the play behind the plate with Snyder …

No, I don’t know what happened. I didn’t see it. I was watching the ball. I don’t know. I  just hit the ground.

On pitching inside …

No, I was trying to go inside. I had been trying to go inside all day and it was kind of leaking back on the plate. I had one more out and one more inning. I was just really making sure I got in on the righties.

The first one was maybe eight or nine inches off the plate and second one really got away from me. I think I overthrew that one a little bit. It happens.

On why Snyder would charge …

You are going to have ask him that. I don’t know what he was thinking.

Rob Johnson’s day is done after hitting a deep fly to right-center that was robbed of extra bases by Drew Macias’s leaping catch.

It’s starting get really ugly. Luke French has given up three runs on three hits, and the D’Backs have 18 hits in the game.

Some comments from Chris Snyder

On if he thought Lee threw at him on purpose ..

Yeah.  He went in on the first pitch and the next one as at my head. It’s spring training. That’s all it is. I ain’t trying to put myself back in the season. I missed enough time last season.

On why he charged …

Because he threw a ball at my head. You try standing in there having a ball thrown at your head.

I don’t know. You get caught up in the moment. Doing something like that … I don’t know man.

On the collision with Lee at home …

It was just two guys going to where they are supposed to be. He got me good. He Charlie horsed my leg. I felt it every time I squatted. He hit me in the leg and threw a ball at me. He’s up 2-nothing on me.  He got me better than anybody coming around third.
