It’s an all-musical Sweeney-Griffey production

Here’s another reason to love Mike Sweeney and Ken Griffey Jr. – they’ve hatched an idea to bring the Seattle Mariners together this week, and it’s going to produce laughter and perhaps camaraderie.

Mike Sweeney

Before stretch this morning, Sweeney called the entire roster together to make the announcement: There will be an “American Idol”-like contest in the clubhouse on Saturday, with the singers in this case being teams selected by Junior and Sweeney.

The setup: Each group consists of players with less than two years of big-league service, must pick a song, download the musical version and then perform it Saturday. Costuming is key, Sweeney said, as is choreography.

There are 10 teams and 31 players competing – whether they want to or not. Here are the teams, and the team names:

The Confused Kickers: Garret Olson, Luke French, Shawn Kelley.

Hawaiian Punch: Matt Tuiasosopo, Steven Barron, Kanekoa Texeira.

Sexual Chocolate/Vanilla Cream: Greg Halman, Mike Wilson, Adam Moore.

Bonus Babies: Dustin Ackley, Josh Fields, Danny Cortez.

3Lefteeze:  Nick Hill, Ryan Feierabend, Chris Seddon.

Future Franchise:  Michael Saunders, Rob Johnson, Doug Fister.

The Seattle Newbies: LeVale Speigner, David Pauley, Steven Shell,  Anthony Valvaro.

Bad Bodies Swinging Big Bats:  Brad Nelson, Tommy Everidge, Mike Carp.

El Cantando Batteria de Venezuela:  Mauricio Robles,  Guillermo Quiroz, Luis Ontiveros.

The Caribbean Connection: Ezequiel Carrera, Edward Paredes, Ricky Orta.

  1. All I can say, is I really do hope that they take a video of the performances. Maybe the fans should judge the best singers/dancers…or worse singers/dancers.

Bad Bodies Swinging Big Bats is an appropriate name for Nelson et al….they look like they should be operating the Frisko Freeze in the north end.

This kind of stuff is awesome. This is 100% of what was WRONG with McLaren. He didn’t get it. Same goes with Bavasi putting together a “team”. Everything was wrong. We have funny players who are leaders and help keep the tension low, and then a manager who knows when to let the players have fun, and also be a part of the coaching and such. It is a true team effort in all facets. Wak is the boss, and everybody else respects him and responds.

I will be stunned if this team doesn’t win and win frequently. Thank goodness Dr. Z took over the team and made the changes that needed to happen. This is why a guy like Milton Bradley isn’t a massive risk. No matter what, his ego will never overpower the ability and overwhelming personalities that you have in guys like Griffey and Ichiro. Ichiro lays low, but you know for a fact that Milton Bradley isn’t stupid enough to get into his face, because a guy like Griffey will set him straight FAST. Everybody who watched how Griffey interacted with Silva from day 1 last year is aware of how huge his impact can be. He made sure Silva laid off of Ichi and Ichiro produced and was a happy man.

Anybody who says signing Griffey was a bad baseball move just doesn’t understand the big picture.

mike – cordero likely would accept a minor league demotion. as for taping the american idol contest, no media allowed.
