I’ll post this quickly and add to it when more details come out.
But RHP Ben Sheets has signed a one-year contract with the Oakland A’s. As late as yesterday afternoon, it appeared that the Mariners, A’s and Rangers all figured to be the finalists in the bidding for Sheets.
It’s being reported by SI’s Jon Heyman that Sheets’ contract is one-year deal for $10 million, with performance bonuses. I don’t know that Seattle would have given up that kind of money.
How interested were the Mariners? No one is certain. I asked GM Jack Zduriencik about it last week, and of course he didn’t want to comment. But he said his prior relationship with Sheets – both were with the Brewers – wasn’t going to make Sheets’ decision.
I’m indifferent to the Sheets signing. Obviously, he could help the Mariners if fully healthy. And he could help the A’s if he’s healthy because he’s that talented. But if or when he gets fully healthy is a question mark. And it’s not just the surgically repaired elbow. Sheets has also had a myriad of shoulder problems. Since 2005, he’s made six trips to the disabled list. Sheets is 86-83 with a 3.72 ERA in eight seasons with the Brewers.
So cross Sheets off your list. Some starting pitchers like John Smoltz , Jon Garland, Jarrod Washburn and others are still out there.
Another player to cross off your lists is outfielder Xavier Nady, who has signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Cubs.
Nady could play some left field and be a right-handed hitter off the bench.
He too has also had injury issues, missing the 2009 season after having the second Tommy John surgery on his elbow in his career.
Some of the remaining right-handed bats available are Ryan Garko, Jermaine Dye, Fernando Tatis, Eric Byrnes and Jonny Gomes.
10 million for one (maybe) year of Ben Sheets????? Did Bill Bavasi get a job consulting the A’s? Now they have two starters who missed last year to injury. That ain’t moneyball. Hooooooooo!!!!!

I doubt if we see any right hand bats coming here.

Why is that?

I don’t think that Dye or Tatis are the type of players that Z is looking for…I’m not sure if Dye would be successful at Safeco (Beltre type flyballs) and Tatis doesn’t have the power (except for one suspicious year with the Cardinals that sticks out like a sore thumb) or OBP that Z is looking for.
Would have to come via a trade.

I’ve read elsewhere that the A’s are close to a deal with Johnny Damon in the 2-3 mil range. If he’s going that low, I’m surprised we don’t snap him up for either LF or DH.

Throws like a girl from LF…would be somewhat interesting at DH, but we seem to be locked into the “gotta love Jr.” phenomena from that side of the plate.
Offensively, this team is looking a lot like the mid-80s Cardinals…not that that is a bad thing.

No way I would want the M’s to sign Ben Sheets at $10mil +. It would be Erik Bedard all over again.
Damon would not put up solid DH numbers in Safeco and would be a liability in the outfield. I would love to see Jack Z bring in a power bat, but none of the remaining FA’s excites me. I would rather see the M’s stand pat and maybe make a run at a big bat midseason. And don’t sleep on Milton Bradley. He had great numbers the last time he was in the AL West.

Leave all those available bats right where they are. Those guys are done. The team need young guys who can play hard everyday. None of those guys can. Let a bat emerge from Peroria. Wilson? Langerhans? X-man? They’ll figure something out. In Jack we trust.

Has Sweeney signed on with anyone yet? If we get the second half version of the 2009 season he might be the RH bat we need to platoon with Jr. at DH.

Nobody worth it on the free agent market. Now if Washburn will accept the major league minimum, then I’d give him a shot.
Otherwise, stick to minor league drafts and the farm system.
