Zduriencik speaks about the Mariners’ payroll assumptions

As we wrapped up the press conference for Cliff Lee today, GM Jack Zduriencik addressed recent speculation about the team’s payroll and remaining money.

I don’t know if he was addressing anyone specific. I know it wasn’t me because I’m smart enough to know that I’m way too stupid to even try to attempt such a mathematical feat.

But here is Jack’s statement …

Just one other comment aside from this …

I’ve been getting a lot of questions and I thought I would take it head on – a lot of phone calls and e-mails in regards to our payroll this coming season. As you know for competitive reasons, there would be no way that we would reveal what our payroll is. I think that is something that stays within our own organization.

That being the case, it’s impossible for anyone to try and figure out or calculate exactly what that is.

And I hope that our fans realize this. We’re going to do the very best job we can, put the best product on the field and move forward in our organization the very best we can.

Just so that there is not anyone misled or there are things there that are inaccurate. With that being said, I want all of you to understand that and respect where we stand on this. Thank you.

I don’t know if JZ was irritated by payroll projections. But I think it’s the last he will speak of it. To be fair, I don’t blame people for trying to do so. It’s something fun to speculate and think about possibilities.

Jackie Z. What a freakin baller. That doesn’t sound like a challenge so much as it does a threat. Sure, some folks out there (including the proprietors of a site named after a ship) might take it as a challenge. But if Jack’s tone is any indication, he will kill you if you try to calculate the team’s payroll.

There are some things that are impossible. Sneezing with your eyes open. Flying naked on a bearskin rug. Jumping out a window and falling up.

Calculating the Mariners’ payroll is not impossible. It’s just going to result in your death. At the hands of Jack Zduriencik. Nice.

Nice work seattlesportsnet. I can’t stop laughing. Well done. :)

  3. Yeah, that’s pretty funny.

LOL @ seattlesportsnet. I thought, “SOMEBODY, somewhere knows those numbers. It’s just math, sweetheart.” No, I don’t need to know, and don’t actually care. Just put a contending team on the field for a change. Fortunately, that will keep Z too busy for homicide.

  5. WTraveler says:

I agree with what Jack has done so far, but to say that not mentioning salaries in total is for competitiveness reasons is insulting the intelligence of the fan base. What does that have to do with competition?

I think we have all learned the measure of how good a baseball club will be does not have much to do with how large (or small) the payroll will be. I heard somewhere that a 100+ million payroll can produce a 100+ loss season record. I seem to recall one of those seasons…..
