Figgins to sign in Seattle? Maybe, but not today

There’s a bit of a panic mode at rumor central, where some folks think the signing of third baseman Chone Figgins is about to be announced, but the Seattle Mariners aren’t participating.

Yes, they’re talking to Figgins, a 31-year-old free agent and an Angels catalyst. Yes, they’re serious, and they’ve done some negotiating on how long and how much a contact Figgins will accept.

But don’t expect an announcement today – or over the weekend. Among the reasons, the Mariners need to await Adrian Beltre’s decision on whether to accept arbitration, and he doesn’t have to tell them before Monday.

Sign Figgins today, and have Beltre accept arbitration Monday – where he’d like want a repeat of the $12.5 million he made last year – and you’d have a problem.

Figgins could play the outield, but the Mariners want him at his best position, which is third base. According to reports today, Seattle has offered him a four-year, $32 million deal or a three-year, $27 million contract.

Figgins reportedly wants four years and $36 million. He’s a .291 career hitter with speed, bat control and last year stole 42 bases and scored more than 100 runs. No, he’s not a middle of the order hitter, but the Mariners need players like Figgins, who can provide solid defense and play little ball.

If you want to read more speculation, take a look at the report. Or you can check out a Jon Heyman tweet.

jmatt – noon? the figgins rumor was on this blog before 8 a.m., and we post what’s going on every morning about that time.

The AP is reporting he signed, pending a physical. Either the Mariners heard from Beltre or Figgins will play 2nd if Beltre stays. Where does Lopez go?
