Obviously, the hot stove season is upon us. And while I have a few responsibilities and a few reasons for not posting with quite as much regularity, I’m still going to post some.

So let’s get to some links.

This morning ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote about the Mariners possibly signing free agent pitcher John Lackey.

I don’t know what to make of it. I guess it’s a possibility. But it’s kind of like saying Sophia Bush might say yes, if I asked her out.

Could either happen? Yes. Will it happen? It doesn’t seem likely.

Jeff  over at Lookout Landing offered up his take on the situation as only he can.

I think everyone is in agreement here with the idea that if the Mariners are looking to throw a lot of money at a starting pitcher. It should be this guy.

Along those lines, SI’s Jon Heyman is at the GM meetings in Chicago and he talked with Jack Zduriencik and has this note in his story today.

The Mariners are sure to get calls on superstar pitcher Felix Hernandez — or, as one GM put it, they’ll get “hits” — since they at least listened to interested teams this summer. But Seattle is telling teams that they intend to spend the winter trying to lock up Hernandez. The Mariners failed in the past to hold on to former superstars Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez and Randy Johnson — but they seem serious about doing what they can to keep the 23-year-old right-hander.

Fox Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi also caught up with Jack Z in Chicago and had this report.

Adam Jones’ brother, Jonathan, let it slip on his myspace page that Adam is going to win a gold glove award.

Don’t expect the same for Mariners CF Franklin Gutierrez. While the gold gloves aren’t position specific in the outfield (LF, CF, RF), a couple sources close to the situation, say that Gutierrez didn’t win one, but that RF Ichiro Suzuki will win his ninth gold glove.

It has been mentioned before that Jarrod Washburn is interested in returning to the M’s as a free agent. But other teams have interest in him as well, including the Minnesota Twins and the Milwaukee Brewers. While Wash loves Seattle and Rick Adair, both teams offer a chance to him to be closer to his home in Wisconsin.

Newsday’s Ken Davidoff lists the Top 10 GMs in baseball. And Jack Zduriencik does not make the top 10.

Here’s an interesting article by Jerry Crasnick from ESPN, where he polls the GMs at the GM meetings about different aspects of this offseason.

MLB Trade Rumors — the site for all things hot stove – posted their list of  top 50 free agents.  Erik Bedard was 26th and Russell Branyan was 36th.

Speaking of free agents, Elias came out with their official rankings for free agents. Both Adrian Beltre and Erik Bedard are type B free agents.

  1. pgrahlfs says:

31 year old pitcher to 5 or 6 year deal at 15+ million a year. Not something the M’s are going to do. It either goes pretty well and the Mariners pay full value for his performance or he get injured/old/innefective for part of the contract and the Mariners lose out. This is a risk the M’s simply can’t afford. He is a great pitcher and another team who can afford the risk will pull the trigger.

  2. Adam Jones’ brother, Jonathan, let it slip on his myspace page that Adam is going to win a gold glove award.

Repeat after me: I hate Bill Bavasi. I hate Bill Bavasi. I hate Bill Bavasi. I hate Bill Bavasi. I hate Bill Bavasi. I hate Bill Bavasi. I hate Bill Bavasi.I hate Bill Bavasi.I hate Bill Bavasi.

  3. Imagine this M’s outfield: Ichiro, F-Gut, Adam Jones.

    I need a Pepto-Bismol.
