Five games and a few goals left

Five games left in their season, counting tonight, so what do the Mariners want?

To win as many as possible, obviously, to set the bar for 2010 as high as possible, and to look at a few of their youngsters in the final days.

Adam Moore will start at least one more game, catching Ian Snell on Friday. Michael Saunders will patrol left field tonight. Matt Tuiasosopo will likely get at least one more game at second base. And Doug Fister will start tomorrow night.

They would love to get another victory for Felix Hernandez – it would be his 19th of the season. Jose Lopez needs eight RBI for 100, and that seems a tougher proposition.

What you won’t see again is Jack Wilson at shortstop – his bruised heel still has him limping around the clubhouse. And it’s unlikely you’ll see Russell Branyan.

Carlos Silva is likely through relieving this year, and has agreed to go to winter ball and pitch. Luke French is the left-handed long man after losing his job in the Seattle rotation – doubtful you’ll see him pitch again.

Rob Johnson won’t catch again until he works with Felix on the finale on Sunday.

At some point early next week, the Mariners front office is going to sit down and take a long look at the season – and they’re going to be amazed at how far they went with so little talent.

We’ll be talking about that, too. Tune in.

  1. The roster has many talented players.

    – Felix is competing for the Cy Young award.
    – Gutierrez has been the best CF in baseball according to fangraphs.
    – Ichiro is Ichiro.
    – Jose Lopez is having a career year.
    – Russell Branyan did as well.
    – Bedard when healthy, is one of the best pitchers in the game.
    – Beltre’s bat is not what it was, but his defense is still excellent.

  2. Larry Larue says:

Jack – All true. Of course, Beltre, Bedard and even Lopez may not be with the team next spring.

  3. Larry,

What will Beltre command on the market? Who are the other 3rd basemen available? What’s the story on Lopez? I thought he was locked up.

Personally, I’d let Bedard go without an effort to sign.
