Just got this press release in the press box, GM Jack Zduriencik has announced the hiring of Jeff Kingston as assistant general manager.

“I am excited to add Jeff to our front office staff,” Zduriencik said. “He assisted in several capacities with San Diego and his skill set and diversity will aid this organization as we move forward.”

Kingston, 32, has spent the last nine seasons in the baseball operations department with the San Diego Padres. He has been the Padres Director of Baseball Operations since November 2002. He got his start in baseball when he was hired by Theo Epstein as an intern for the Padres and worked directly under him.

With the Padres, his primary responsibilities included assisting general manager Kevin Towers and the assistant GM Fred Uhlman, Jr. in all player acquisitions, as well as roster, payroll and budget management.

He was also heavily involved with the Padres contract negotiations, including salary arbitration efforts, he also helped oversee the Padres statistical analysis and video scouting systems.

Talking to a source close to the Padres, he said that because Kingston worked with both Epstein and then later Towers, he’s got beliefs in both the saber and scouting aspects and is pretty well-rounded in that regard.

A 1999 graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, Kingston holds a degree in economics.
