A Question Or Two Still Remain

Closing in on their opening day roster, it appears the Mariners bench will be Ben Broussard, Willie Bloomquist, Jamie Burke and Rey Ordonez.

And the pitching? Well, it’s still a matter of three pitchers – rookies Brandon Morrow and Sean White and lefty Jake Woods – for the final two spots in the bullpen.

All three have pitched well this spring. If they don’t keep White, they must offer him back to Atlanta under the conditions of the Rule V draft. Both Morrow and Woods can be optioned to the minors, but only one of them will be, and it looks like the odd man out is Woods.

A left-hander who started, relieved and worked long out of the pen last year, Woods has had a marvelous camp, done everything asked of him and will probably open his season in Tacoma.

The Mariners, meanwhile, will likely have to make room on their 40-man roster for four non-roster players.

They can put injured pitchers Mark Lowe and Cesar Jimenez on the 60-day disabled list and clear two spots, but after that it’s dicey. Two spots will have to be opened by leaving players vulnerable to waiver claims.

Are a backup catcher (Burke) and a reserve infielder (Ordonez) worth that?
