WEST PIERCE: District’s levy deserves voter support

Renewing West Pierce Fire & Rescue’s maintenance and operations levy deserves voters’ support. This two-year levy, which will fund more than 25 percent of the fire district’s budget, is not a new tax. It replaces the current levy and it will not increase taxes.

In these difficult economic times, we must continue our support for essential first responders. Medical aid calls make up nearly 90 percent of West Pierce Fire & Rescue’s total calls for help. Quick response time can be the difference between life and death. Supporting the levy will help maintain quick response times.

WEST PIERCE: Support our firefighters and paramedics

Many years ago I experienced a medical emergency at home, and my wife called 911. When I awoke and opened my eyes, I saw two paramedics looking down at me. That was the beginning of a long and supportive relationship with the Lakewood Fire Department.

Lakewood voters will have the opportunity to acknowledge their support for the men and women of the Lakewood Fire Department — now part of West Pierce Fire & Rescue — by approving Proposition 1 on the Aug. 16 ballot.

UPLACE: West Pierce levy’s a life-saver

In 2003, my late husband Terry fell backwards off a ladder at our home and hit his head on concrete. The University Place Fire Department – now part of the West Pierce Fire & Rescue – rushed him to the hospital where he was kept alive for one more day, allowing family, friends and me the precious gift of time to say goodbye.

If not for their work, I would have come home and found him lying dead on the cement.

Last year, our granddaughter, Grace, saw the inside of an ambulance at National Night Out. Because of this she

LAKEWOOD: Fire merger makes a lot of sense

The time has come to cast your vote for the merger of our two very similar fire districts. For the last couple of years both set of of district commissioners and both department staffs have been been studying, analyzing and evaluating the feasibility of merging. Many of the state’s fire districts have seen the value of combining and have accomplished it.

Our two districts already share vehicle maintenance, training, boundaries, big fire scenes, etc. It makes a lot of sense to share administration and all of the other needs of the districts.

In these economic times, this merger will aid

LAKEWOOD: Support fire districts’ merger

On the Feb. 8 ballot is a measure asking voters to approve the merger of the Lakewood and University Place fire protection districts. In doing so, we would approve creation of a consolidated department known as West Pierce Fire & Rescue, which would be led by the experienced team of Chief Ken Sharp and Deputy Chief Mitch Sagers.

The merger will join two of the highest rated districts in Pierce County, eliminating redundant equipment, programs and positions and improving efficiency, while maintaining the excellent service and outstanding leadership on which the members of our communities rely.
