ELECTION: Iverson is a one-sided candidate

Does Pierce County Council candidate Todd Iverson only have liberal Democrat, labor unions and politicians supporting him?

The recent letter from University Place City Councilman Eric Choiniere supporting Iverson proves my point. Besides being a politician, Choiniere is a current member of the Communication Workers of America Local 7800 and was an Obama delegate in 2008, claiming in one of his blogs that “I keep filling my Obama bank every day. It is now 1/4 full. When it’s full, it goes to the campaign.”

On top of that, Iverson is endorsed by the Progressive Majority, an ultra-liberal group

ELECTION: Iverson brings needed energy and a fresh perspective

What do we want in a representative? As we age, we gain certain things; one of those, if we are lucky, is calm judgment. We send our children to school; we teach them at home; we try to impart knowledge, manners, civic responsibility, and the importance of giving back. We then pass them the torch.

Being a University Place City Council member, I know what it takes to hold public office. I know Todd Iverson is ready for the position. He has a 9-month-old son. He wants his son to enjoy all the happiness and beauty that

ELECTION: Voters need to do their homework

I have been attending all the forums held in Gig Harbor and thank the Chamber of Commerce for holding them. On a recent day, the candidates for Pierce County Council District 7 included Stan Flemming and Todd Iverson. I asked both candidates about their opinion on initiatives for the state income tax and privatizing liquor stores. I also asked if union contributions would affect their objectivity when making decisions the council will soon face on possible wages, benefits and hiring freezes.

Voters need to know that Iverson wants state control of liquor stores and a state income tax, and while

ELECTION: Iverson will represent both sides of the bridge

Todd Iverson is the choice for District 7, Pierce County Council. He brings a breath of fresh air, energy and commitment to solving problems that is lacking in the other candidates.

I met Todd early in the race and was impressed with his knowledge of issues and his ability to advocate for common sense solutions. I am a resident of the 7th Council District. Todd is the only candidate who recognizes that those of us who reside on the east of the bridge need representation. In the past we have been totally ignored by our council representatives. His position

ELECTION: County Council not for beginners

I attended the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce candidate forum Thursday to hear from Stan Flemming and Todd Iverson, two of the eight County Council District 7 candidates. I walked away from that meeting surprised that one of the candidates was his party’s standard bearer.

Iverson is a nice young man with his heart in the right place, and if he sticks with his stated avocation may grow into a model politician. But today he is easily the least experienced candidate with the thinnest résumé of all eight contenders for this seat.

Given the economic strains that Pierce County will

ELECTION: Don’t disparage candidate’s union ties

In the Pierce County Council District 7 race, some want to make an issue of Todd Iverson’s membership in his union. What is wrong with being in a union?

I am an airline pilot and have been for more than 30 years. I am a union member. Why should that matter? It should matter because it gives me the confidence to determine if my airplane is airworthy, if the weather is right for departure or landing, and myriad other issues of safety. If you fly with me, you can rest assured that I have checked everything and determined that we

ELECTION: Iverson is a liberal Democrat

Re: “One candidate is the real Democrat” (TNT letters blog, 8-2).

I am responding to Mark Brown (chairman of the 26th District Democratic Party) and his letter about who is a bigger Democrat in the race for Pierce County Council District 7.

Brown states that Chuck West describes himself as a Dino-crat. Many Democrats and independents voted for Dino Rossi in the 2004 governor’s race, and this is evident considering Rossi lost by fewer than 200 votes out of millions cast. So I would say that West was not alone.

What Brown does not state in his letter

ELECTION: One candidate is the real Democrat

In its endorsement (7-21) for Pierce County Council District 7, The News Tribune editorial board said, “Longshoreman Todd Iverson, firefighter Chuck West and civic leader Betty Ringlee are running as Democrats. Ringlee stands out in the field: She knows land use issues, spent eight years as former Councilmember Karen Biskey’s assistant and 10 years on the Peninsula School Board. She’s our Democratic choice in the August primary.”

You pretty much said all that need be said for a start. Let’s examine this a little further, however.

These three are “running as Democrats.” West, though, describes himself as a Dino-crat. Ringlee
