ELECTION: Flemming leaves voters wondering

When Stan Flemming ran for Congress while serving on the Pierce County Council, his self-created bio on teapartycheer.com states: “Flemming was first elected to the Washington State House of Representatives in 1992 and became the first Native American to be elected to that chamber. In 1995, he left the state House to become the founding father and first mayor for the City of University Place, Washington.”

The first Native American elected to the state House was from the Colville Tribe back in 1964. And in 1992, as a Democratic candidate, Flemming rode Bill Clinton’s coattails to victory but lost in

ELECTION: Young better mental health advocate

At a recent forum I attended, Pierce County Council candidate Stan Flemming argued against equalizing taxation for mental health services in Pierce County, saying it should be a “tool of last resort.”

Mental health care is a human right and a proactive measure in public safety. The mentally ill are strongly overrepresented among jail inmates. More than 10 percent of inmates are severely mentally ill, and estimates show about half have a diagnosable condition.

Of course, everyone should be held responsible for their crimes. But we have an opportunity here to stop tragedies before they happen. When Flemming joined the rest

ELECTION: Pierce County needs Stan Flemming

The election is near the finishing line, and there is considerable debate on the qualifications of our candidates.

In my opinion, the most qualified candidate in this state election is Stan Flemming for Pierce County Council District 7. He is a retired U.S. Army reserve general who was attached to a Marine fighting unit in Iraq. He is also an experienced medical doctor. These experiences alone put him far beyond any other candidate in organizational ability and people skills.

In addition, his political skills are well known as a Democratic state legislator as well as a Republican Pierce County councilman. This is

ELECTION: Stan Flemming is right for District 7

Stan Flemming has represented the people of Pierce County District 7 exceptionally well over the last four years and will do so for the next four.

Though the district’s borders were redrawn during redistricting, Flemming stayed true to his values of “service above self.” Few know he has a 98 percent record of resolving citizen issues. Or that he has worked with the Tacoma city manager to find ways for the county to facilitate some road repairs.

His work on the peninsulas is near legendary. For that reason, he is endorsed by former County Councilman Terry Lee.

Flemming worked to make sure the county remains financially sound by

ELECTION: Stan Flemming is a proven leader

As a Democrat, I am baffled by those who advocate for changing Pierce County Council members when we have one of the few leaders in our county who has since he was elected fought for those of us who feel overwhelmed by government at times.

Stan Flemming’s impressive record in health department reforms, resolving constituent issues, preserving our open space and parks, funding for transportation and for the poor and elderly, supporting a balanced budget and, most important, listening to us regardless of our party affiliation are among his accomplishments and why we should give him a second and final opportunity to

ELECTION: Derek Young best for County Council

I have lived in Pierce County Council District 7 since it was created back in the early 1980s, so I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly over the years.

The current District 7 councilman, Stan Flemming, spent much of his first term running for Congress while the County Council loses its focus on improving the quality of life for residents.

We have a great opportunity to elect a person to County Council District 7 who has proven to the residents of Gig Harbor for 16 years that he has the skills and commitment to getting the job

ELECTION: Flemming better understands Tacoma issues

As a longtime Tacoma resident who grew up in Gig Harbor, I strongly support re-electing Stan Flemming to the Pierce County Council. I would like to join Tacoma leaders such as Tim Farrell, Karen Vialle, Ryan Mello, Victoria Woodards, David Boe, Tacoma Police Union #6 and others in supporting the best candidate.

In this era of partisan gridlock and lack of progress in government, it is imperative we elect officials who care more about problem solving than politically driven opportunism. Flemming’s opponent has defined his candidacy in past mailers by partisan politics and blame and does not have a coherent

ELECTION: Keep Flemming on Pierce County Council

UPDATE: The author of this letter writes, “ I didn’t mean to speak for the Key Peninsula Civic Center Association or its board. I inadvertently mentioned my role in the community, and I apologize for that as one might misunderstand and believe that I was speaking for the board. I clearly do not speak for all of the fine people in the organization, only for myself based on my experiences.”

As president of the Key Peninsula Civic Center Association, I would like to reiterate our support for Stan Flemming as our Pierce County Council District 7 representative.

I am
