Columnist Robert Samuelson is grasping at straws and manipulating statistics to justify the Supreme Court decision in McCutcheon v. Federal Election Commission. After stating “money is speech that aims to affect how people behave,” Samuelson downplays the political influence the decision has unleashed.
According to him, donations by rich individuals and corporations to candidates and Super PACs have not adversely impacted the country because “most federal spending goes to the poor and middle class” (in other words, the 99 percent).
