POLLS: Uninformative data need fleshing out

Re: “Election will pit weak incumbent against a weak opponent” (David Gerson column, 4-3).

Gerson states that “Americans overwhelmingly believe the country is on the wrong track.” This often-cited result from polling data is not informative because it does not address why people think as they do.

For example, some people think President Obama’s policies are taking the country in the wrong direction. Others think the Republican-dominated House policies are taking the country in the wrong direction.

Until pollsters ask people why they are responding as they do, the data from this simplistic question provide no substantive information.
