RACE: Couldn’t a real Native American be found to play Tonto?

The latest fiasco involving Paula Deen is horrible. You would think that in the year 2013 we would not have to put up with the shortcomings of racists in our national media. Her products should be taken off the shelves of our stores as a way of public protest, a way of saying the American public just won’t put up with this type of behavior anymore.

Along with Deen, maybe we should rethink buying “Lone Ranger” products as well. Isn’t it also racist to have a white person portraying a Native American in the movie? Johnny Depp has said that

DEEN: Media hypocrisy at its best

Paula Deen may as well turn off her oven because her goose is cooked. Why? Because the news media has charged her with the absolutely unforgivable sin of having used a racial epithet at some time in the distant past and because of that and the color of her skin her financial future and her reputation now lie in ruin.

While we have all probably made comments of some sort that we regret, some people seem to be immune from harsh criticism by the mainstream media.

DEEN: Double standard seems to be in effect

While I am no fan of Paula Deen and do not defend her, I am very tired of all the hoopla surrounding her actions. It seems the double standard is alive and well here.

A politician makes a “mistake,” apologizes and, in a couple of days, it blows over and we hear no more about it. Deen makes a “mistake,” apologizes, gets blasted repeatedly in newspapers and TV programs for weeks on end and we will never be allowed to forget.

Politicians hurt their constituents; Deen hurt herself. Which is the greater betrayal?
