ISLAM: Muslims need our support now

I implore Americans who care about America’s covenant of community to reach hands of friendship to our Muslim brothers and sisters. It is time for people of conscience to speak out against the stereotypes, the fear-mongering, and the bigotry that crush the hearts of American Muslims. Anti-Islam is the new Antisemitism. We know where that leads insecure and frightened people who feel that their nation is losing its dominance.

Think what it must feel like to be Muslim in America today. My own Muslim friends are anxious and afraid to speak up. They feel like Jews in Nazi Germany, just

MOSQUE: ‘Wrong’ thinking labeled racist, phobic

Re: “American Islamophobia running out of control” (editorial, 8-27).

This editorial perfectly illustrates the point that Charles Krauthammer makes in his column at the bottom of the same page: that media/political elites will assign negative labels to any opponent who is winning an argument.

I would expect the editorial board to provide a more insightful analysis instead of a regurgitation of the latest Time magazine cover article – and using someone else’s polls doesn’t prove anything. This groupthink is exactly why the mainstream media is losing its credibility.

The issue is not just about building a mosque in Manhattan, illegal

MOSQUE: Is this who we really are?

Re: “NY mosque supporters, objectors march” (TNT, 8-23).

We always fear what we don’t understand. Unfortunately, for political gain, many on the right are playing on these fears and ginning up a fever pitch of anti-Muslim feeling to serve their own purposes.

Many on the right decry the limitation on the free practice of religion in other countries, yet they would limit it here. They would not assume that the KKK’s burning crosses and Bible verses represent their Christianity, yet they are willing to believe that all Muslims are terrorists.

It is absurd to think that peaceful, normal Americans who

MOSQUE: Emotion must not trump freedom

Recent commentary and letters pointing to the proposed “ground zero” mosque’s legality and poor taste are both indisputable and well-taken. However, I ask my fellow Americans to consider the following.

On Sept. 11, 2001, we were attacked by a radical, criminal terrorist organization. Recognizing the strong Judeo-Christian tradition present in our country, this organization has co-opted the Muslim religion in an effort to influence us to target our rightful anger at the Muslim community as a whole rather than at them. In this way, they think they can elevate their sadistic criminal activity to a higher level of conflict, perhaps

MOSQUE: True patriots want freedoms protected

I am an American white male raised as a Christian, and a retired disabled war veteran. My brothers did not sacrifice and die in any of our wars so that supposed “patriots” can stop freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

The supposed “patriots” need to remember what our country did to the Japanese-Americans in World War II and the great sacrifices their sons made for this (their) country. Would they have done the same? These supposed “patriots’ need to remember that Muslims are currently serving in our armed forces. How many of these supposed “patriots’ have served their

MOSQUE: Let’s hope cooler heads prevail

We need to understand the nature of New York City. Having been born and raised there, I’ll explain.

Two blocks in New York can be like a mile anywhere else. Buildings are so jammed together, even a half-block away can be a completely different neighborhood. One side of a street can be luxurious, the other tenements.

I understand the charged emotions of the 9/11 survivors. But emotions should not dictate policy. It is why we have police, not vigilantes. Cooler heads must prevail.

The Constitution is not a document to be trotted out or, conversely, ignored when convenient. It is

MOSQUE: 9/11 attackers were moral hypocrites, not Muslims

All of this bluster and furor over the construction of a “9/11 mosque” has again left me shaking my head, mouth agape, at my fellow thin-skinned Americans. Other than having haled from the Middle East, and having a slightly olive hue to their pigmentation, the 9/11 attackers were no more Islamic than you, me or the family dog.

They used an aberrant interpretation of an Islamic belief system to justify their own pathological self-hatred, impotence and bigotry. Remember, in the days before 9/11, these self-proclaimed pure and holy Muslims were frolicking in Las Vegas, drinking and chasing women… having their

MOSQUE: American Muslims have a right

American Muslims have a right to build a mosque a few blocks from ground zero. It might have been wiser to build it elsewhere in view of the bigotry in America. Al-Qaida committed the 9/11 massacres. They are Muslims. However, 1.4 billion Muslims did not do it or approve of it.

Nazi Germany and fascist Italy started World War II. German Nazis committed the Jewish Holocaust. The Nazis ruling Germany were all Christians (except Martin Bormann). Adolph Hitler was a Catholic “until I die.” Professed Christians comprised the highest inner circle of Third Reich Nazis. Hitler claimed to be doing
