911: Place blame where it rightly belongs

Re: “Call-takers criticized for 911 calls in Powell tragedy” (TNT, 2-9).

It’s a very difficult time for the people in our community, following the tragedy of the Powell boys’ deaths. Thus, I try to be understanding of the emotions and desire to find someone to blame for such an incident.

In reality, there is someone to blame for this horrific event – Josh Powell. Attempts to lay blame on the 911 dispatchers, the case worker, the courts or anyone else is purely emotional, in my humble opinion.

911: David Lovrak is one of LESA’s heroes

Re: “Call-takers criticized for 911 calls in Powell tragedy” (TNT, 2-9).

In 2008, I worked briefly for the Law Enforcement Support Agency (LESA), the command center that receives the Pierce County 911 emergency calls. The 911 operators were the most professional group of people I had ever met.

One operator stood out not only for his professionalism, but also his kindness and compassion with every caller, regardless if the caller was drunk, confused, elderly or being threatened by violence. POWELLS: TNT does call-takers a disservice

Re: “Call-takers criticized for 911 calls in Powell tragedy” (TNT, 2-9).

The News Tribune does a grave disservice to all employees of the Law Enforcement Support Agency (LESA) in suggesting that a communications officer inappropriately handled the call that preceded Josh Powell’s tragic murder of his two sons.

To criticize the officer’s tone as rude, impatient and abrupt shows a complete lack of understanding of the job. Communications officers at LESA are trained professionals who answer hundreds of calls daily and must extract critical details that can be crucial in protecting community members and law enforcement responders.

911: Tax proposal isn’t good for Puyallup

Some time ago, the federal government mandated updates of the 911 system in Pierce County. Puyallup citizens paid to update while Pierce County, Tacoma and Lakewood declined. Puyallup provides service to other cities and is in compliance.

Time has expired, and jurisdictions have to comply. Those agencies need updates and should for various reasons.

The citizens of Puyallup and their customers should not have to be taxed for upgrading the county, Tacoma and Lakewood’s 911 systems. Problems within their systems are real, but problems with cross communications are exaggerated.

911: Tax increase should benefit all dispatch centers

Re: “Vote likely for area 911 tax” (TNT, 6-19).

The initial proposal of a one-tenth of one percent increase in the sales tax to upgrade South Sound 911 is a worthwhile cause as it would improve safety for the citizens of Pierce County and, of utmost importance, the safety of our law enforcement officers and firefighters.

The most troubling part of the proposition is that it falls into a “them and us” situation. The revenue from the countywide sales tax would fund combining three existing 911 call centers (Law Enforcement Support Agency, Tacoma Fire Communications and Pierce County Fire Communications)
